How to Answer Tell Me About Yourself

Structure and examples for the opening 'tell me about yourself' question.

How to Answer Tell Me About Yourself

Use a past–present–future structure: briefly where you started (education or first role), what you're doing now (current role and 2–3 key responsibilities or wins), and why you're here (interest in this role and company).

Keep it to 1–2 minutes. Don't recite your resume line by line. Highlight what's relevant to the job. Practice so it sounds natural, not memorized. End with something like 'That's why I'm excited to be here today.'

Tailor the 'future' part to the company and role. If they're a startup, you might mention agility and ownership; if they're enterprise, stability and scale. This shows you've thought about the fit.
